COMING IN FROM THE COLD AT AED

Here we are in Chicago – my kind of town in any season – and looking forward to meeting new dealers and to renewing many old friendships at this year’s Associated Equipment Distributors’ Summit conference.

In spite of the warm reception we can always expect from our host, the Hyatt Regency, much of the talk around the hotel will be about equipment working in freezing winter conditions and the cold snap that is threatening to halt construction projects across the Midwest and the Northeast (New England area got 17” of snow this past weekend).

Of course, machinery feels the cold as badly as we do. Everyone has concerns about whether their equipment and vehicles will get up and running in those dark winter mornings.

Grease gets heavier and harder to move when temperatures drop, but thanks to BEKA’s eccentric gear drive and proper grease for the temperature, our pumps make sure that once your equipment starts, it will run safely. Many lube pumps rely on a spring-driven mechanism to actuate the pistons that drive grease through the circuit. But springs are notoriously vulnerable to extreme weather, hot or cold! With BEKA’s eccentric gear drive, the pump doesn’t rely on the resilience of its metal to move cold grease. Rotating on a direct connection to the pump motor, the solid gear operates consistently, at the same speed and power, regardless of temperatures.

CHOOSING THE HIGH ROAD IS ALWAYS GOOD BUSINESS

We were very pleased and proud to learn that our advertising agency, a long-time ally in our growth as a company, was selected recently as a finalist for the Business Integrity Award from the regional Better Business Bureau.

In this case, however, I’m not a bit surprised – I know that the recognition is well deserved. I recall a column on “Truth in Advertising” that the owner and founder of the agency, Robert, wrote for a major business publication. In it, he explained how basic integrity must be at the root of any lasting business success. “Outrageous promises and unsupported claims will always attract attention, and maybe even make a sale,” he wrote. “For the long term, though, you rely on repeat business and referrals… anything that smacks of dishonest advertising will be called to account, loud and clear.”

The value of integrity goes beyond advertising alone, of course. Robert’s firm has always provided us with honest, transparent guidance, which has led us to a close, lasting business partnership built on trust.

And that’s the way we believe all business ought to be conducted. We know it works. I have watched, first-hand, as our BEKA Lubrication “brand” grew to nationwide leadership. Along with our success and profitability, we earned the trust and friendship of manufacturers, dealers, suppliers and customers everywhere. The creators of BEKA products, Baier + Köppel, also recognized the strength of our brand values in America. And that became a major factor when the factory negotiated the recent acquisition of our business.

There have been times when it may have been easier for us to over-promise to our dealers, or resort to questionable marketing tactics, or to walk away from a customer’s problem… but that doesn’t build strong companies.

One of the first lessons of business we learned in our formative years is that ethical (and respectful) business practices are the only path to take for long term success. The end of 2015 is already here!

Looking back, it’s easy to see how the past 12 months went by so quickly. We’ve had a very busy year, best reflected in our full travel schedule. As the new year began, our focus was on reaching out to meet more of our customers and to introduce more people to our unique position in the lubrication marketplace. Nothing can replace meeting face-to-face, so we set out to do just that.

On tour
The year got off to a great start with the AED show in Florida, which opened doors for us to several “customer first” dealers to represent BEKA products. (More on that, below!) March kept us closer to home at the National Heavy Equipment Show in Mississauga, ON, where we always enjoy seeing so many of our Canadian friends.

The ISRI conference in April brought us some spectacular views from Vancouver’s PNE, which proved to be an outstanding venue. Attendance was not what everyone might have hoped but we enjoyed quality time with those who were able to make it and we look forward to seeing them again in Vegas in April. As members of the Empire State chapter, we’ll see more of our ISRI friends at local meetings through the year.

The Hard Hat Expo is a must-see show for us every April, bringing together all of the top OEMs in the construction industry as well as fleet and maintenance managers for all of New York’s leading contractors and district, county and state fleet managers.

Wind energy is a hot topic in many circles, which made for a good showing at last May’s American Wind Energy Association show. BEKA has offered a line of specialized systems for wind turbines for several years, and we continue to do a lot of work in this area.

The Global Petroleum Show in Calgary is a great showcase for new products and equipment for the oil & gas industry. This year’s event in June was very well attended, allowing us to shake hands with people from producing fields and exploration sites all over North America. June took us back to Florida for the annual Waste Expo to catch up with both equipment manufacturers and facility operators. Our new MATO line of professional-grade grease guns was especially well received at this show.

In November, the Agritechnica exhibition in Hanover, Germany, gave us a chance to exchange ideas with the technical gurus from the BEKA factory. The show drew huge crowds, and we were pleased to see so much interest in the Canadian and US pavilions. Meeting with suppliers and buyers there, we came home very excited by our prospects for growing the lubrication business for agricultural equipment.

Our travel plans for 2016 will be just as full. We will be back at many of the same shows again, and a special highlight will be joining forces again with the BEKA factory for the giant BAUMA exposition in Munich, April 11-17th.

Selling with service
As we mentioned at the top, the AED show led us to a number of new dealers who we are proud to welcome to our product lines. Their response to our service philosophy and capabilities has been personally gratifying to our own staff. Dealers tell us that we are easy to deal with and they appreciate how we stand behind every product with great service. Our time in the field has given us a first-hand understanding of the pressures on dealers to deliver quick response times along with good equipment. Our investment in dealer support helps their service departments to keep the customers coming back for new equipment. The ad we ran in the AED show guide said “Show Them Some Lube.” and that is exactly what happens when we bring on a new dealer! So, if you are a dealer and are planning to be at the AED meeting this year, please stop by our booth and begin the conversation. You will be glad you did.

Reaching out
Our program for raising industry awareness of our capabilities included two important projects in our marketing communications. Our new website launched to very favorable reviews in this past year and we also began publishing the quarterly RunTimes newsletter to cover interesting new applications and insights into our varied lubrication systems and products.

Doors open in Buffalo
Apart from our busy trade show itinerary, October gave us a chance to host a special event of our own! On October 28th, we officially opened our new facility in Buffalo, NY, with an open-house celebration. Visitors came by to share their experiences with BEKA products, to see some of our new additions, to see the line and to tour the facility.

The new location will serve us and our customers very well with easy access to highways and local airport. It also lets us expand our inventory and service area with 7,000 sq. ft. of warehouse and shop space.

Growing our line-up
This year saw our introduction of the new BEKAONE single-point lubricator – a simple solution for reliable and precise greasing for any existing lube point. BEKAONE units fit right into hard-to-access Beka One Image 2 Jan. 2016and hard-to-service lube points on almost any device that needs routine servicing such as motors, drives, bearings, conveyors, compressors, and chains. As our Product Manager, Dave McDougall, says, “It’s easy to forget an out-of-the-way service point. BEKAONE takes care of everyday servicing for you, so you can forget it without worry.”

BEKAONE sets up easily and operates independently for up to two years. Less than 3” in diameter, it fits into tight spaces with 4-ounces of lubricant. The reservoir can be refilled up to six times using just a grease gun.

For 2016, we will formally introduce the GIGA electric lubrication pump to North America. The GIGA units were previewed at ConExpo, introducing our first line of electrically powered pumps for central lubrication. With a complete range of sizes and pumping capacities from 3.0 to 12.5 cc/min, GIGA pumps can supply intelligent lubrication for single line, dual line, and progressive systems.
